.. _participation-tum: Active participation in the academic environment of TUM *************************************************************** Participation in teaching, like giving tutorials for Bachelor or Master students or supervising a practical course in physics or chemistry - at a level adequate for scientific qualification - is an indispensable element of your doctorate. Sufficient involvement in the TUM School of Natural Sciences's academic environment is generally obtained by participating in teaching activities and registering those within our :ref:`Teaching Duties System ` hosted at the `DSSNAT server `_. .. important:: For all Ph.D. students, including :ref:`external ` Ph.D. students, there is a **minimum requirement of 2000 teaching points** over your Ph.D. This corresponds to the former **minimum requirement of 2 exercise modules (tutorials, Übungen) of 2 weekly hours (SWS), each over one semester**. The point system was introduced to balance different teaching tasks to this requirement of a total of 4 SWS, as in our experience, it is not possible to fairly balance the workload among Ph.D. students based on SWS alone. For example, practicals have a different workload than exercises, and corrections yield no SWS at all. Generally, a minimum of 50% of the teaching points must be core teaching activities like tutorials (Übungen) or practical courses, i.e., teaching in the presence of students. :ref:`Internal Ph.D. students ` **have a teaching load related to the funding**: a 100% full-time contract corresponds to 2000 teaching points per semester, a 50% contract to 1000 points per semester, and a 67% contract to 1340 points per semester, etc. Please find further information about registering your teaching in the section :ref:`teaching-duty-system`, where you will also find a :ref:`teaching-jobs`.
