Publication of the thesis¶
After successfully completing your examination, the title page of your dissertation must be formally approved before you can proceed with publication.
You will receive a letter as well as an email from the Office of Doctoral Affairs – Promotionen (located in downtown Munich) containing more information on this.
Title page submission¶
Once you have received the letter, please send the finalized title page - including the names of the committee members, the submission date, and the date of acceptance - to the Examination Office. The necessary information can be obtained from either the Examination Office or the Dean’s Office.
Important: Your dissertation may only be published after the title page has been officially approved.
Publication Options¶
Online Publication
You may publish your dissertation electronically via mediaTUM, the media server of TUM.
Publication via a Publishing House
Submit six printed copies of your dissertation to the University Library.
An ISBN is required for this option.

After publication¶
Once your dissertation has been published, you might receive a preliminary certificate confirming the completion of the Ph.D. process.
Note on Embargoed Publications¶
If you wish to publish your dissertation with an embargo period:
Complete the embargo form provided after your oral examination.
Submit the form along with the author contract to the University Library.
This option is available only for electronic publications.
Final certificate¶
Once the final Ph.D. certificate has been prepared by the Examination Office, the newly awarded Ph.D. graduate will be notified. The certificate can then be collected from the Dean’s Office.
All graduates of the TUM School of Natural Sciences will be invited to the next graduation ceremony, organized by either the Department of Physics or Chemistry, depending on the field of their dissertation.
TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS) Certificate¶
Members of the TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS) will also receive an additional certificate documenting their participation in the qualification program.
This TUM-GS certificate, along with a Transcript of Records detailing the completed qualification elements, is issued independently of the Ph.D. certificate by the TUM Graduate School.
Your Graduate Center will inform you once the certificate is ready for collection.
