Active participation in the academic environment of TUM

Participation in teaching, like giving tutorials for Bachelor or Master’s students or supervising a practical course in physics or chemistry - at a level adequate for scientific qualification - is an indispensable element of your doctorate, and it is required to complete your doctoral degree.

You can generally meet these requirements for sufficient involvement in the TUM School of Natural Sciences’ academic environment by participating in teaching activities and registering those within our Teaching Duties System hosted at the DSSNAT server.

For the School’s purposes, teaching experience gained at other institutions does not count as teaching experience with the TUM School of Natural Sciences. This policy ensures a consistent and transparent framework for evaluating the relevant teaching experience and performance of our employees and PhD candidates. Only teaching organized by the NAT School will be considered for your teaching experience. If in doubt, please ask before accepting teaching jobs.

Important

The teaching load is allocated among groups in a collegial manner. Supervisors distribute their group’s teaching load among the group’s members. All Ph.D. students, including external Ph.D. students, must complete a minimum requirement of 4 SWS during their Ph.D. studies. This typically translates to 2 exercise modules (Übungen, tutorials) of 2 weekly hours (SWS) for 1 semester each.

Your supervisor will guide you regarding the scope and type of courses that you will teach.

Please find further information about registering your teaching in our wiki, where you can also find a list of teaching jobs.

For PhD students who plan to participate in teaching, we have a list of current teaching jobs and contact information for centrally organized teaching:
