Application for the Master's program in Chemical Engineering

The Master's program in Chemical Engineering at TUM can be started in both the winter and summer semesters and follows a two-stage aptitude assessment procedure (AP).

In Stage 1 of the AP, the submitted application documents are evaluated and scored according to predefined criteria. Suitable applicants are invited to a personal selection interview on-site in Stage 2 of the AP. The outcome of the interview determines admission or rejection. The following points are examined in the interview:

  • Ability for scientific or fundamental and method-oriented work,
  • Existing subject knowledge from the undergraduate studies following the Bachelor's program in Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich,
  • Ability to discuss and solve complex scientific problems,
  • Interest in natural and engineering science application problems,
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a research-oriented manner.

Tuition Fees for International Students

In principle, studying at TUM is free of charge. All you have to do is pay the semester fee for the student union.

For international students from third countries, i.e. from countries that do not belong to the European Economic Area (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), tuition fees will be charged from the winter semester 2024/25. All information about fee levels, waivers and scholarship programs can be found on the tuition fees for international students website.

Application periods

Start of studies in the winter semester: April 1st to May 31st

Start of studies in the summer semester: October 1st to January 15th

Documents to be submitted

In the application portal, the following documents must be uploaded:

  • A transcript of records with modules totaling at least 140 credits for a six-semester bachelor's program, at least 170 credits for a seven-semester bachelor's program, and at least 200 credits for an eight-semester program; the transcript of records must be issued by the competent examination authority or the responsible student secretariat,
  • Curriculum vitae,
  • A written statement in German, of maximum one to two DIN-A4 pages, explaining the choice of the Chemical Engineering program at the Technical University of Munich, demonstrating the applicant's particular commitment and suitability for the Master's program in Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich,
  • The curriculum underlying the university degree, which must outline the respective module contents and the competencies acquired (e.g., module handbook, module descriptions), as well as the online form prescribed by the Examination Committee for Chemical Engineering, in which the applicant independently enters the grades, credits, and semester hours of the examination achievements of the listed subject groups,
  • A declaration that the statement regarding the choice of the program was prepared independently and without external assistance, and that any thoughts taken from external sources are clearly marked as such
