Open Call for Physics Students: Interdisciplinary Collaboration with Art Students

The Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 1258 Neutrinos and Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), in partnership with the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK) and Haus der Kunst München (HDK), is launching an interdisciplinary project that bridges the worlds of physics and contemporary art.
This open call is directed at B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD physics students from TUM, inviting them to collaborate with art students from AdBK to explore particle and astroparticle physics through creative media. The goal: to engage deeply with scientific themes and the methods used to investigate them—such as the search for dark matter and the exploration of neutrinos—while translating this inquiry into visual, conceptual, or experimental art forms.
Kick-off workshop at TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach in October
The project begins in the winter semester 2025/26 with a joint kick-off workshop at the TUM Science & Study Center in Raitenhaslach (27–30 October 2025). Participants will also embark on field trips to leading international research, Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (Switzerland), in winter and spring 2026.
Mentorship & curatorial guidance from experts in the fields
Throughout 2026, participants are invited to develop their own artistic projects in close collaboration with renowned photo and video artist Armin Linke (Professor of Photography at the AdBK) and physicist Prof. Dr. Elisa Resconi (Chair of Experimental Physics with Cosmic Particles, TUM).
Selected projects will receive curatorial support, a production budget, and the opportunity for professional exchange with experts from both the arts and sciences—including Andrea Lissoni, Artistic Director of Haus der Kunst Munich. A presentation of the works is planned for 2028 in collaboration with Haus der Kunst Munich.
