Exam Registration Withdrawal in Case of e.g. Sickness
If illness or other compelling reasons prevent you from taking the exam on the scheduled day. The examination board of your degree program is always responsible for withdrawals from examinations and the recognition of certificates! The following statements apply to students of TUM School of Natural Sciences. Students of other departments should contact their own department, even if exams of the School of Natural Sciences are affected.
You must declare your withdrawal from the exam without delay, i.e., usually on the day or latest one of the days immediately after of the exam, and include proof (e.g. a medical certificate for illness). The proof must clearly state why you are unable to attend the exam (a standard sick note is generally not sufficient). A withdrawal request without proof is incomplete and thus legally void.
General information on exam withdrawal and the submission of medical certificates
A medical certificate to justify withdrawal from an exam needs to clearly state the medical reason, why you cannot take the exam on this day. It should regularly be based on an examination that took place on the day on which you assert your inability to take the exam. It must state the beginning and (expected) end of the inability to take the examination due to illness. Please also note the general information provided by TUM. Certificates from your attending physician (e.g. family doctor) are usually sufficient.
If you confirm that you will keep the original of the certificate at least until the relevant semester grade report becomes legally binding (i.e. usually in the middle of the following semester), if the examination board requests the original document, it is sufficient for the time being if you submit a digital scan or photo. To protect your data in this case, please use the upload form in the digital school services. Please include your matriculation number and your field of study in the message. Of course, you can also submit the original certificate by post. We will then confirm receipt and booking of the certificate by e-mail to your TUM address. In any case, the certificate must be submitted immediately to the relevant examination board.
If you do not show up for examinations during the period for which the certificate is recognized, this will not be counted as a failed attempt. You will have to take the examinations concerned at the next examination date.
Withdrawal from an examination within the GOP or the fundamentals exams in Master's programs
Since the number of attempts in module exams within the fundamentals and orientation exams (GOP) in case of illness, the immediate withdrawal from the exam proven by a medical certificate is very important. Otherwise not showing up for the exam is treated as attended and failed.
The same applies to the fundamentals exams in Master's programs. Only if you declared the inability to take the exam immediately, you may later refer to this inability as reason for a deadline extension request.
Repetition of a Module Exam after Recognized Withdrawal
The module exams affected by the recognized withdrawal have to be repeated as soon as possible (i.e. at the next regularly offered date). The legal fiction of registration ("Meldefiktion") from §45 paragraph 2 of the FPSO continues to apply to future examination dates of the GOP. This means, that the secretary of the examination board will automatically register you in TUMonline for the next regularly offered exam to this module. If you were ill on the second examination period immediately before the lecture period of the following semester (regular repeat examinations), the next examination date is usually the date in the following year. You continue to study in the second or third semester and then take the missing modules from the GOP in the third or fourth semester - unless the other GOP modules are finally failed.
The deadline for the mandatory credits from the GOP according to §38 paragraph 2 FPSO is suspenden in case of recognized withdrawals from GOP exams, since you can only obtain the credits in the next examination attempt.
Keep in mind, that (especially in non-GOP exams) there is not automatic registration for repeat exams. You need to register for the repeat exams yourself.
Illness for a long period during the semester
If a prolonged illness (i.a. an illness with a duration of many weeks during the semester) prevents you from attending courses and preparing for exams, contact Dr. Katja Block / Dr. Oksana Storcheva (contact person for studying with a disability or chronic illness) to clarify whether this can be recognized for compensation for disadvantages like an extension of deadlines, or de-registration of an exam with fiction of registration (e.g. during the fundamentals and orientation exams) and limited number of attempts and which medical certificates may have to be submitted.
Illness, etc. During Your Thesis
Have you been sick and thus unable to continue working on your Bachelor’s or Master’s Thesis you may hand in a medical certificate. From the doctor’s certificate it must be clear how long you were incapable to work. According to §18 paragraph 6 sentence 6 APSO your working time on the thesis is suspended during this period. The due date will be shifted accordingly.
