Accident and Lab Insurance

Students and doctoral candidates are covered by accident insurance as part of their education and training. It is often advisable to take out liability insurance or possibly laboratory insurance.

Accident insurance

Insurance coverage is provided for enrolled students of TUM for all study-related activities that fall within the organizational responsibility of the university (TUM): temporal, spatial, content-related, and organizational influence of TUM on the activities. This includes not only attending lectures, seminars, or exercises, but also participating in student self-administration, visiting the university library, or going on excursions.

Students are not insured in the context of their private activities at TUM (e.g. visiting the cafeteria) and their self-determined study-related activities outside of TUM, such as reviewing a lecture at home or private study trips. However, there is statutory accident insurance provided by the Bavarian State Accident Insurance Fund (Bayerische Landesunfallkasse) for the preparation of final theses and dissertations, as long as the work is done within the organizational responsibility of the university and there is a significant, direct temporal and spatial connection with TUM and its facilities. Related activities in private or domestic settings, however, are not covered by insurance.

Information and the responsible contact persons regarding accident insurance for TUM employees, students/guest students, doctoral candidates, pupils and scholarship holders can be found on the relevant pages of the Legal Office. Students can also find additional information at the Munich Student Union.

Liability and lab insurance

As there is no general liability insurance cover for students, it is therefore advisable to take private precautions to minimize risk during labs or when writing your thesis. For example, laboratory equipment is not insured even if it is damaged in an accident. The user is personally liable for damage to this equipment, even in the case of slight negligence. Please note that some private liability insurance policies include "lab insurance". You should clarify this with your insurer in each individual case. Alternatively, you could take out additional "lab insurance" on the open market.

Information and the relevant contact person(s) on liability regulations for TUM employees, students/guest students, doctoral candidates, students and scholarship holders can be found on the relevant pages of the Legal Office.
